MERCANTILE CLOSED FOR REPAIRS
Jury Not Convinced
Mayella Ewell spent most of her time crying on the witness stand. Someone said she felt that Atticus was insulting her because she thinks he is mocking her. She said her mother is dead and has been living with her father for a long time. She explained she had called on Tom to come and do a few handy jobs throughout the years. She cannot remember things like if he hit her and that she was not raped by Tom, but abused by her father. When Tom Robinson took the stand he said that due to an accident with a cotton gin, his left arm was completely useless. Tom agreed with Mayella on the part of him doing odd jobs, however, when it comes to the time of the alleged rape, he said that she came on to him very strongly. He said when Mr. Ewell walked in, he cursed his daughter. Despite the truth about what really happened, the jury still found Tom Robinson guilty.
Atticus Finch - Loser?
Atticus Finch sets a standard of morality that is very important in Maycomb County, He sets as a good role-model for the Children of Maycomb to be more responsible and always tell the truth. Mr. Finch was the lawyer for Tom Robinson in the Tom Robinson Trial, accused for raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch defended his client by having Miss Ewell finally confess that she was lonely and had no friends. She could not explain the bruises on her right side alledgely done by Mr. Robinson, especially since he has no use of his left arm. According to Atticus Finch, he and his family suffered for his decision to defend the Negro. Mr. Finch had this to say to the reporters, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it"
