| Atticus - Nigger Lover? or Fool! |
| Ever since Atticus Finch was asked to defend the Negro he
has been called a lot of bad names from people who do not like Negroes.
We asked Mr. Atticus Finch WHY was he doing this. "The main one
is that if I didn't, I couldn't hold my head up in town." |
| Church Mad at White Folks |
| Miss Calpurnia brought two white children to the church. The
congregation protested against bringing whites into a black church. The
Reverend had to step in and allow the kids to enter. The two children belong
to Mr. Atticus Finch of Maycomb who was away at an emergency meeting called
by the legislature. |

| Grand Jury Charges Negro |
| Seventy-five year old local judge, Judge Taylor has notified
the people of Maycomb that the grand jury will charge accused black man
Tom Robinson for the rape and attack on the dear sweet Mayella Ewell. The
Negro will be defended by Maycomb's own Atticus Finch. |
| Courthouse Brawl Erupts |
Following the grand jury hearing in the town's courthouse,
the news that Atticus Finch would defend Tom Robinson caused a lot of problems
for the local folks. Robert E. Lee (Bob) Ewell, the father of the alleged
rape victim Mayella Violet Ewell, blocked Mr. Finch on the steps and shouted
many questions and comments toward the lawyer. This reporter heard the following
from Mr. Ewell:
"I'm real sorry they picked you to defend that nigger that raped
my Mayella. I don't know why I didn't kill him myself instead of goin' to
the sheriff. That would have saved you and the sheriff and the taxpayers
lots of trouble...". It appears this trial will be a very hot issue
in this little town of ours. |
