Good Neighbor
Stephanie Crawford came to the assistance of Miss Maudie when she lost her home due to a fire. She will let the homeless Miss Maudie stay with her until her house is rebuilt.
Firefighting Heros
The people of Maycomb helped put out the fire at Miss Maudie's. A BIG Thank You to the Maycomb fire truck, the Abbottsville fire truck and an unidentified third truck that came all the way from Clark's Ferry, sixty miles away.
Miss Maudie Loses Home
A fire had started at Miss Maudie's and spread through the town. There were fire trucks from 3 counties and everybody in town was helping put the fire out. The men of Maycomb took furniture fromn Miss Maudie's house to a yard across the street. It was a close call for Mr. Avery. Witnesess said they saw Mr. Avery's face appear in an upstairs window and then pushed a mattress out the window along with some furniture. Men could be heard shouting to him "Come down from there, Dick! The stairs are going! Get outta there, Mr. Avery!" He finally escaped through the window. After it was over, Miss Maudie was not too sad about what happened. She said, "Always wanted a smaller house...Gives me more yard. Just think, I'll have more room for my azaleas now!"
Weather Blamed For Fire
According to Miss Maudie, because it had been so cold the last 2 weeks the fire must have started in the kitchen. She had kept a fire going for her potted plants and the flue in the kitchen must have caught on fire.
