Our last article on dieting the fast way has generated a lot of e-mail! Melissa from El Paso, Texas wrote:
"Hi. Ok, I haven't been here for a while but I need some help. I seem to go through spurts of motivation, like sometimes I don't care about my weight at all, and I have times when I'm so mad at myself for piggin' out! Help me! How can I keep myself motivated to lose weight?"
Answer: Stop-Stop-Stop! Think about it. If you followed through on a healthy lifestyle (NOT a diet) way back when you first wrote me - even with occasional "pig outs" - you'd probably, absolutely most likely, be several pounds less right now. But nooooo, even after I keep writing that lifestyle, not dieting, is your key to weight loss, you still think you need to "diet" and when you blow it, you think it's all ruined, so you quit. Then, say on "Monday" you decide to start again. When you blow it again, you quit again.
Well, again I say, I yell, it's not about dieting! Pigging out once in a while won't ruin a healthy lifestyle. Heck, there are days that even I just eat ice cream or chocolate Godiva or peanut pralines or something just 'awful' like this - all day long. I really mean "ALL DAY"!
But the next day I resolve to forget it, let it go, and I do, and continue onward and forward with my new lifestyle, which is the biggest challenge you will ever face, to create a world where only you matter in this quest to shed unwanted pounds naturally. Don't sweat the pig out days! One or two of them has NEVER done any harm, and has NEVER caused me to gain weight back. Look, having weighed close to 200 lbs at my worst and maintaining a slow weight loss regime now, after trying EVERY diet and device there is.... I promise you, this WILL work for you!
The ONLY thing I am doing 'differently' is to learn portion sizes. I had to learn to just stop eating after mealtime. No snacking. No constantly feeding my face in every room in the house, the car and while I was working. Well, I had all this extra time now that I wasn't living to eat - so I put more time into my computer and wrote, wrote, wrote. Some volunteer causes get my attention, to keep me distracted while trying to make a difference, but not many as there is always tempting food around those meetings. This was all the 'exercise' I needed.
You can only imagine how my life is now - no 'forbidden' foods, no disorders, no gimmicks, no devices and no memberships. Just my LIFE! I am on a weight downhill course and I constantly pinch myself saying, "Oh, if only I knew then what I know now", you know?
So, the next time you see a diet or weight loss ad, no matter what for, from electronic belts to meal replacement shakes, focus on the BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN or the smallest print of the ad - "Results Not Typical" and/or "these claims have not been evaluated by the FDA " - and "paid endorsement". They are telling you, albeit in small print and flying across the screen that they are lying to you. Yet, every year, the fattest country on earth spends $33-Billion dollars per year to get fatter! Hmmmmm?
From my point of view, the entire diet industry is a fraud, a threat to good health and self-image and is a blasted waste of time, effort and life. Learn from the fad dieting mistakes of others! Please!
